The primary responsibilities of the fiber splicer will be to splice/test fiber optic cables aerial and underground in both outside (OSP) and inside (ISP) settings. Read, create, and maintain splicing schematics, and diagrams, and create/maintain accurate splicing and field notes. Maintain control of outside plant (OSP) - inside plant (ISP) activities surrounding the assigned work area(s). Support project timelines, conduct inspections, designing and providing accurate as-builts for projects. Other duties, responsibilities and qualifications may be required and/or assigned. (This is meant to be a guide. Duties may vary dependent upon management.)

 Essential Position Functions:

  • Able to splice/test fiber optic cables including both loose tube and ribbon cables.
  • Able to read and interpret work orders, specifications, engineering drawings and/or cut sheets to determine work to be done in sequence of task.
  • Able to construct proper splice cases including but not limited to grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing.
  • Able to perform work in accordance with TIA and RUS standards, as well as customer specific standards.
  • Must be comfortable entering and maintaining existing splice enclosures.
  • Knowledge of the installation of fiber optic cable in new and existing conduit.
  • Able to terminate, test, troubleshoot and maintain fiber optic networks.
  • Must have good attention to detail regarding setting up splice locations, termination points, and general fiber optic construction. 
  • Able to place a mid-sheath splice.
  • Able to test/troubleshoot fiber using OTDR.
  • Ensure that all work considers the safety of the customer and public and compliance with all governmental orders.
  • Ability to safely utilize bucket trucks, access manholes, and hand holes.
  • Use of hand tools, ladders, and equipment to assist in the completion of an assigned project.
  • Daily documentation of work performed, material usage, and other record keeping tasks.
  • Daily timekeeping required.
  • Perform work following established and TrueNet mandated Safety and Health guidelines.
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and effectively with little to no supervision.
  • Other duties as required.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred. 
  • 3+ years of fiber splicing experience is preferred.
  • Ability to read and follow engineering design maps.
  • Must have intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Adobe Acrobat skills preferred.
  • Must be able to efficiently use a Windows-based computer.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Able to effectively handle multiple priorities with a strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communications skills.
  • Must be able to work alone, and with a team.
  • Must be able to pass and maintain FOT certification.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a clean driving record.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen.

  • Frequent walking, standing, climbing, bending/twisting, pushing/pulling within the work area.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical to obtain and maintain a DOT Health Card.
  • Must be able to work in a confined space and at high elevations/aloft 40’ (poles, hydraulic lift buckets, ladders).
  • Must be able to lift, up to 100 pounds. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate with employees, management, peers, et al.
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, and dry).

  • Must be able to travel up to 50% (most travel is planned).
  • Ability to work in all temperatures, climates, and weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends, as needed, to meet client needs.
  • Full knowledge and capability of driving a bucket truck and/or pulling a trailer.
  • Carry, set-up and extend ladders weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Working in/on buckets trucks, ladders, and utility poles at heights of up to 40 feet. 
  • Must be able to work in loud, noise-filled environment out in the field.
  • The position requires working independently, as well as part of a team.
  • This position requires verbal and face-to-face contact with others daily.
  • Frequent use of a computer is necessary.
  • This position requires use of all general office equipment.
